“Fads are the kiss of death. When the fad goes away, you go with it!”Formally, a fad is anything that a group of people collectively chose to follow enthusiastically for a particular span of time. Fads can be anything- be it in the fashion industry, diets, toys, jewellery etc. You would have quotes such as “Internet is such a passing fad” or “Social media is not a fad because it’s human”. “Fad” or “craze” is used in day to day conversations without realising where it originates and where and when it fades.
You will also find that fads and trends are very different from each other!! Fads are usually short lived in comparison to trends which have a longer staying power. For instance, fashion fads can sometimes last a season or even a month and will fade as quickly as they appeared. Fads are usually driven by people who want to get with others – the larger population. Trends, on the other hand can stay sometimes for years or even decades. If you want to be able to differentiate between trend and a fad, you could ask yourself whether you would use or wear that product in the next 5 years. If the answer is yes, it is definitely a trend!
Fads can be culture or generation based! They are usually based on the perception of it being “cool” or a new “craze” around. So if your peers or a social group you might be a part of, deems something as being popular you might be attracted to that idea. For example, if an idea or opinion is shared on social media and it gains popularity it can be regarded as a new fashion fad or a new craze! But, as mentioned earlier fads are short lived and that’s because of the very reason that if the novelty goes so does the fad.
The “fad” is influenced by celebrities, or the elite; by society who encourages notions and introduces new and innovative rages; or simply by people around you – if you share similar emotions and perceptions towards a certain topic! So, the creator of a fashion fad or any other fad could be anyone who has an impact on a group or vice versa. The influences may vary but with creativity a thought or an idea can be turned into a fad in just some time.
So it would be safe to say even though “fads” have gain popularity they are ever evolving and changing with the times.
